Matt Vandermeer
Head Coach
Coach Matt VanderMeer has enjoyed several years combined of playing and coaching volleyball in a variety of roles. He will be returning for his second year with NW Reign. He values highly the personhood of all competitive jr athletes and believes in providing fundamental volleyball skill instruction to those who choose to compete at a high level. Moreover, he aims to further develop the qualities of grit, confidence and character in jr athletes. He supports/encourages the teaching of mental discipline that helps athletes to maintain a consistently positive attitude with unyielding effort to overcome adversity on the court and in life. Coach VanderMeer’s expectation is to create a positive coaching experience for all players and aims to foster an environment conducive to growth and learning life skills that transcend volleyball. Above all, he views coaching to be a privilege and wants to be an extension of the support families provide their individual jr athletes.
Coach VanderMeer is married to his wife (Heidi) of 22 years. He also has a son and a daughter who currently attend college. He is a graduate of Sam Barlow High School in Gresham, OR. While attending high school, he enjoyed playing a variety of sports but developed a sincere love for the game of volleyball. Sydney Hillario
Assistant Coach
Sydney will be returning to NW Reign for her 3rd season! We are happy to have her return to our 18's pod with coach Matt. Sydney began coaching immediately following her juniors career. She began coaching a freshman girls volleyball team and successfully completed two seasons in that role. Her goals were to instill confidence in her players, promote a growth mindset, and pass on her love for the game. She puts an emphasis on positive mindsets, being a great teammate, and giving 100% effort on and off the court.
Sydney was the assistant coach the past two years with two of our most successful teams. We are looking forward to her joining Matt and bringing her energy and experience at NW Reign this past season. Sydney brings her competitiveness, attention to technical details, and enthusiasm for the sport to this coaching duo.
Sydney developed a passion for the game in the 7th grade. She played throughout high school and club as a setter. She continued her volleyball career at the University of the Pacific women's volleyball club team as a setter. After graduating, she has continued to play in competitive indoor and grass adult leagues where she was able to gain more knowledge and experience in her personal goal of being a well rounded player.
